Newsworthy: Best Buy purchases Napster for $121 Milli

Publish Post

Best Buy says it will keep all of Napster's LA-based staff, including CEO Gorog, on board. (Gorog has a 6.24% stake in his company, which includes options for 1.7 million shares and about 1 million unvested restricted stock units; all of those shares should vest when the deal closes.) In theory, this means that the landscape for digital music subscription services doesn't actually change that much: There's Napster, RealNetworks/MTV's Rhapsody, and Microsoft's Zune pass offering, and none of them have made much impact despite years of effort and millions of dollars burned.

Estelle sales plummet after removing album from iTunes

From The Urban Daily:

Estelle’s album sales have pretty much dropped to non-existent status after Warner’s greedy little hands yanked the R&B singer’s latest album, Shine, off iTunes in the U.S.

NME.com reports that the record label chose to pull the album off iTunes to force fans to buy the album in stores because it makes the company more money. Apparently Warner didn’t get the memo that no one buys CDs anymore. Since, the album has dropped from number 38 to number 159 in the US Billboard albums chart and her hit single ‘American Boy’ dropped from number 11 to number 37 in the singles chart.

The record labels still don’t get it: Being greedy selfish bastards is just not working anymore.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Blender says 2Pac is the most overrated thing in music

Ooh, boy. The mailbag people at Blender are gonna be extra busy once this hits the newsstands:

He had insane rock-star charisma. He admirably conceived of a gangsta rapper as a principled rebel. His booming baritone gave basslines competition for the most-trunk-rattling part of a hip-hop song. Hell, even Juice hasn’t aged nearly as badly as you’d expect. But while Tupac’s musical highs were epic—the pro-feminist “Keep Ya Head Up,” the terrifying “Hail Mary,” the boisterous “California Love”—that still leaves 15,837 other songs. He was a good rapper, not a great one: The guy larded records with self-mythologizing, mediocre filler that wouldn’t have made Biggie’s “give to Lil’ Cease” file. Maybe someone in his retinue could’ve stepped in during one of those legendary 96-hour recording binges and said, “Pac, instead of laying down this 14-minute rant about how Sun Tzu taught you how to take down the East Coast, how about some Yahtzee?” The man: awesome. The music: somewhat less than awesome.

See the entire list here.

Baron Davis and Steve Nash are...STEP BROTHERS!
